This week we’ll be focusing on the letter B, and on learning about bugs. Cut out a capital and lower-case letter “B” and add it to your calendar area. Display pictures of bees, bugs, ladybugs, butterflies, or whatever else might be familiar where you live. Also, beach starts with B. If your weather cooperates, plan a day to go to the beach. I’ve scheduled it for Friday, but it can easily be switched to another day as weather and time permits.
Keeping butterflies can be a great experience. Look for butterflies, caterpillars or cocoons when you are out. Collect some of the leaves from the plant where they are found. This is important, because some butterflies, like the monarch, will feed on only one kind of plant. You can find a field guide to butterflies at your local library. There is a nice bug collecting set for sale in my store, if you can’t find one locally.
When I look for books, I visit Amazon.com, not just so I can add something for sale to my store, but so I can find what is currently available. Many of my resource books contain lists of great children’s books, but I cannot find them either in the library or the book store. So I take the time to search through Amazon, reading all the parent reviews, and selecting what I think might be the best choices. I add a few puzzles, games, and other materials as I find them.
This week I discovered two things: Prince Lionheart wheely toys and the Teddy Bears Picnic CD. The wheely toy can come painted red and black like a ladybug, or yellow and black like a bumble bee. It’s a handmade toy imported from Australia, and has won many awards. Being multi-directional, it encourages gross motor skills, and is “heaps of fun”. My granddaughter might be a little old for this neat toy, but if I get another grandchild someday, I know I’ll be adding a Prince Lionheart toy to the must-haves list.
Watch a video excerpt about the wheely toy.
The music CD is gorgeous. You can listen to excerpts of it if you go directly to Amazon.com. If you like band music, you will love this recording.
I hope you and your child have a great time this week! Share with us how you use the lessons, or what are your favorite parts. I look forward to hearing from you!
